We use “very” to add emphasis and force to an adjective or an adverb. It means “extremely”; “a lot”.

Examples:

This situation is very serious. = This situation is extremely serious.

I love you very much. = I love you a lot.

Are you tired? No, not very. = This person is only a little bit tired.
